Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has described the attitude of a former Health Secretary at the contaminated blood inquiry as ‘arrogant’.

The former Business Secretary said Ken Clarke ‘didn’t want to believe that the state could possibly have got it wrong.’

Speaking on GB News Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg said: “It's a deeper question than infected blood, because it's the same on all of these things. Postmasters, Hillsborough, everything takes such a long time. And I'm concerned about a drug called Primados which had an effect in the 1960s and 70s on babies, and still the government hasn't done anything about it.

“And so there are other ones there as well, and what really puzzles me is why ministers and civil servants want to cover up for people who have retired, have died.

“No one's blaming this government for mistakes that were made in the 1970s and 1980s and yet it's still seven years since Theresa May set up this inquiry, and we just need to get better at being honest with our voters about what is going on.

“Everyone likes Ken Clarke, he, as much as you, enjoys a pint. But his response to this when he was a minister was just arrogant. It was, ‘we can't be sure’ and the judge in the reports had a go at him for this, about the way he behaved then at the inquiry.

“He just didn't want to believe the state could possibly have got it wrong. And those of us who are in parliament, in office, always be thinking, ‘Is my constituent right? Have we got it wrong and not the other way?’
